Tambo Tours: Machu Picchu

Day 1- USA - Lima Depart flight from US arrive Lima at 11:35 p.m. You will be met and transferred to the Hotel Colon located in Miraflores. Over night at the Hotel Colon.

Day 2- Lima - Cuzco (if you booked air with the tour) You will be met and transferred to the Lima airport and the TANS Airlines flight #237 departing at 9:00 a.m. arriving Cuzco at 10:00 a.m. Our staff will meet and transfer you to the Los Andes. Remainder of the morning to acclimate to the 11,300 ft. altitude in the Inca capital of Cuzco. In the afternoon (1:45 p.m.) our staff will meet and transfer you by bus for a City tour of Cuzco to the Colonial & Inca sites of La Cathedral, Santo Domingo Convent or Q’oricancha, Tambo Machay, Kenko, Pucapucara & Sacsayhauman. Early evening (5:45 -6:15 p.m.). return to Cuzco and the Los Andes Hotel. Over night at the Los Andes Hotel. ( CB )

Day 3- Cuzco - Sacred Valley - Ollantaytambo Our staff will meet and transfer you in the morning (8:45 -9:00 a.m.) into the Sacred Valley of the Inca passing by the Inca terraces and farm land of this fertile region until the town of Pisac and proceed to the Ancient Pisac Market for the annual show where many of the local Indians sell & barter their hand made textiles, fresh fruits & vegetables. After a hour or so of mingling with the locals you will proceed to have lunch at a local hacienda restaurant in the Sacred Valley. Afterwards continue to Ollantaytambo and the oldest continuously habituated town of the Inca. Here there are several structures of importance to the Inca. At the top of the sixteen massive terraces are the ever impressive ruins of Ollantaytambo Fortress where it is known the Inca fought some of their fiercest & strongest battles. The huge precisely carved stones were transported somehow by hundreds of men down one mountain range to the Ollantaytambo location and fitted perfectly to support a strategic fortress that has bared the test of time. Also found here are "silos" or grain mills that are directly adjacent to the fortress and were to have maintained thousands of pounds of grain for the Inca and its people. Some of which was most likely produced by the surrounding agricultural terracing where a variety of crops were grown. Afterwards remain in Ollantaytambo and transfer to the adobe but modern Pakaritampu Hotel. (4:00 p.m.) Overnight at the Pakaritampu. (BB/ L )

Day 4- Ollantaytambo - Aguas Calientes You will be assisted to the Ollantay train station for the train departing at ( 8:00 a.m.) Here you will transfer by auto wagon train winding into the Andean Mountains passing through several small villages where the local Indian farmers manage their farms and reside just as they have for hundreds of years. After a long but scenic ride (1½) hours you arrive into the final stop at Aguas Calientes. Here the temperatures will have changed to that of tropical and a abundance of plants typical for this region of the Amazon basin can be appreciated. Here you will board the tourist bus and proceed up a incredible winding road that leads to the fabled site of Machu Picchu. Upon your arrival ( 10:15 a.m. ) your guide will explain the history & the myths that surround this archaeological wonder. Thousands of people from around the world frequent this magnificent ancient site to pay homage and grasp the spectacular views of Machu Picchu’s 7'800 ft. plateau that the base reaches into the clouds and heavens above. Afterwards ( 1:00-1:30 p.m.) depart by bus to into the town of Aguas Calientes and the Hatuchay Tower for lunch. Remainder of the day on your own. Overnight at the Hatuchay Tower. Day 5- Aguas Calientes - Free Day - Cuzco Full day on your own in Aguas Calientes where you can take a short hike to visit a local butterfly farm, the orchid trail or bird watch for the many variety of semi tropical birds that are habitants of this area. You may as well choose to re-enter Machu Picchu where you can watch the sunrise, hike to the top of Huayna Picchu, visit the Inti Punku Pass (Gate of the Sun ) or explore and take more photographs of the area. In the late afternoon you will bid farewell to the lost city of Machu Picchu and proceed to the Aguas Calientes train station where you will board the ( 3:00 p.m. ) auto wagon train for your return to Cuzco. After your arrival into the Cuzco train station ( 6:45 -7:00 p.m. ) our staff will meet and transfer you to the Los Andes Hotel. ( 2nd day Machu Picchu entry fees not incl. ) Overnight at the Royal Inca II Hotel. ( BB )

Day 6- Cuzco - Lima (if you booked air with the tour) Our staff will meet and transfer you to the Cuzco airport for your TANS flight #232 departing at 7:15 a.m. arriving Lima at 8:15 a.m. Later that evening (9:00 - 9:30 p.m. ) you will be met and transferred to the Lima airport for your flight back to the US. (BB )
